As you are driving along the steep curving hills of Highway 12 in southern Utah, there is a small campground at the bottom of a canyon called Calf Creek Recreation Site and Campground. It is tucked away in a little grotto of vegetation and water that marks the trail head for Lower Calf Creek Falls. Hiking that trail leads you along the side of a green canyon oasis whose mineral-streaked cliffs rise over 100 feet above the creek that gave the canyon its name. The trail is marked easy, but it is not much fun to haul camera gear the 6 mile loop of the trail. However, once you’re near heart attack passes, you will be breathless not from the hike but from the beauty of this canyon.
